Bates Wells is a top 100 law firm which has an impact business model that makes them unique. Since the firm founded in 1970 it has supported clients who want to have a wider impact on the world, including charities, social enterprises and purpose led businesses. This 50 year focus on clients who are making a difference and doing good has given them deep sectoral knowledge, corporate memory, experience and expertise in enabling those making a positive change. Supporting organisations whose work aligns with their values as individuals creates a working environment where their people get real enjoyment and meaning from their work, whilst giving the best to the clients. The experience helps to drive the firm’s own impact collectively and individually. Bates Wells was the first law firm to become a B Corporation and was ranked in the top 5% for governance this year amongst all global B Corporations. The firm has also been recognised with a “Best Companies to Work For” award.

Bates Wells now has an exciting opportunity for a Non-Executive Director (NED) to join the management board in an advisory capacity from March 2023. The firm strongly believes that having a critical friend on the board will help to positively shape and steer its decision making.

The NED will provide objective, constructive advice, challenge and guidance to the Management Board, Partnership and Senior Management Team as required. The NED will contribute to the development of firm-wide strategy, key objectives and management responses to important business decisions On average the firm will expect a commitment of two days per month for the role, although naturally that will vary over the course of the year.

This role will suit a candidate who shares the firms values and wants to make a positive impact and who has deep and broad experience in commercial for-profit businesses. Lived experience in driving change through equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives and an enthusiasm for creating positive change for traditionally underrepresented groups is essential. This person will also need to have experience or knowledge of the charity and social enterprise sector and an understanding of B Corporations and other purposeful and ESG led businesses.

Bates Wells is working in partnership with Totum Partners who are managing this project on an exclusive basis. For more information on this wonderful opportunity please contact deborah.gray@totumpartners.com or tim.skipper@totumpartners.com.
